Fire Damage Landlords Have Insurance, Tenants Should Too Kitchen fire in Bronxville, NY

4 Things to Consider When Choosing a Policy

Lots of people think that insurance is only for homeowners, but they are wrong. When you choose to rent rather than own a home in Bronxville, NY you need to consider protecting yourself with renters insurance as well. Property landlords have insurance that cover their buildings but it does not always cover their tenants. It is best to take the time to research insurance options for you and your personal property that will be kept or stored in the landlords' buildings. Here are four things to consider when choosing a policy.

1. Fire Damage

Make sure the insurance you purchase provides protection in the event of fire damage. Your policy should cover the actual fire, the water damage from dousing the flames and the soot damage that can harm items that do not actually burn.

2. Medical Reimbursement

Make sure the renters insurance coverage that you select includes reimbursement of medical costs for you and your visitors. Some policies only cover your physical property and neglect to protect you or your friends and family if there is an injury in your home.

3. Coverage Limits

Some insurers can put a limit on exactly how much they will pay to replace your damaged items versus the actual value of the items, or how much the insurer will pay towards fire restoration services and cleanup. Check the coverage values before you sign the policy.

4. Liability

Check if you will be covered if you cause a fire as well as if it is caused by negligence or through the actions of another person. Making sure fire damage is covered regardless who caused the fire is important to know before a catastrophe hits.

Don't miss the opportunity to protect you, your visitors and your property when leasing your home. Renters insurance in Bronxville, NY can be a lifesaver if you get the right policy.

Water Damage How To Effectively Locate a Shower or Bathtub Leak Water leak at a Scarsdale, NY bathroom.

Though some water leaks throughout your Scarsdale, NY , home can be easy to spot, there are a vast amount of others that require more than a casual glance. A shower or bathtub leak, for example, can fall into the latter category, as there are a variety of places for leaks to emerge from in these areas. If you’re in need of help identifying a water leak in your shower, read on to learn how to effectively locate one without much hassle. Once the source has been identified, contacting a trained water restoration team can ensure your home is cleared of any water damage, as well.

Check the Common Sources First

Before tearing into the tile work or uprooting your tub, it pays to investigate the more obvious areas first. After a shower, inspect common sources such as the:

  • Shower head face,
  • The O-ring between the shower head and arm,
  • Faucet handles, and the areas surrounding them, or
  •  Caulking at the base or surrounding of a shower/tub combination.

Leak issues are generally noticeable in these spaces and can be more easily detected by sight after running water through your shower.

Have a Professional Inspect Your Shower Pan, Whether New or Old

A shower pan leak is another usual spot for an issue, especially in tiled shower designs. These leaks can start due to the pan being too old and faulty, or simply due to a new one being installed incorrectly. Therefore, it pays to have someone inspect this space as a potential cause for any shower or bathtub leak.

Determine the Severity of the Issue By Searching the Levels Below

There’s no clearer indication of a bad water leak within your shower floor than through the ceiling or flooring directly below the shower itself. Look for signs of water damage or condensation on the ceiling beneath a second-story shower, or throughout your crawl space below a first-floor shower.

When you’re hoping to eliminate a shower or bathtub leak in your Scarsdale, NY , home, follow any of these efficient methods for a quick solo inspection before contacting a professional for further assistance.

Recovery After Pipe Damage

12/31/2018 (Permalink)

A leak in the plumbing system can be a serious hindrance to your business activities in Bronxville, NY. Prevent the need for pipe burst cleanup and other remedial actions by performing the following maintenance.

1. Check the Supply Lines

One of the first troubleshooting activities should be an inspection for supply line leaking. A supply line is a flexible hose, usually with a woven steel casing, that connects a toilet or other device to a source of water. The connections between the supply line and either the fixture or the wall can become points of failure over time. Corrosion can damage nuts or threads and compromise the fittings that keep water flowing smoothly between different pipes. Inspect and replace these as necessary with similar components.

2. Check the Drainage

Another potential problem lies in the means through which water exits the basin of a sink, toilet, or other fixture. These pipes can also fail and create a need for costly water cleanup attention. In addition to checking drain outlets directly, sites such as joints in the u-bend or the sewer outlet can wear over time. Apply caulk or epoxy depending on the surface type if the leak is comparatively minor or is the result of a slightly loose fitting. If the plastic or copper piping is directly cracked or broken along a flat surface, it will likely need a complete replacement to prevent more serious pipe burst cleanup.

3. Inspect Surrounding Materials

Drywall and flooring can become wet, harboring bacteria and mold. If the leak has progressed for a long time, materials such as the plywood beneath the sink or the floor padding below a bathroom may need replacing near the affected area. If the volume of water is high enough to cause standing flooding, it may be prudent to contact a qualified water damage restoration service.

A little bit of preventative maintenance during a leak can prevent major headaches in the future. Stop floods the resulting pipe burst cleanup before they begin by reviewing the above leak correction tips.

Why SERVPRO The 3 Most Common Places To Find Mold Black mold damage on a wall in Elmsmere,NY

Mold Growth In a Commercial Structure

Mold requires moisture and nutriment to grow. High humidity levels, leaks, or other sources of excessive moisture can result in a mold problem. Here are three common places for mold growth in a commercial structure.

1. Behind Walls

Water damage that results from any type of leak, whether caused by a pipe leak or burst or a leaky roof, can cause mold to start growing within cavity walls. Moisture can also come from condensation or a poorly sealed building envelope. Building owners, facilities managers, or occupants may notice a moldy odor without seeing signs of visible mold. Do not attempt to open the wall, as this may cause exposure to microbial volatile organic compounds, spores, or even mycotoxin.

2. In the Carpet

Carpets collect dirt, dust, and debris that provide an ample food source for mold. Flooding, leaks or spills can soak through the carpet to the carpet pad and underlayment. High humidity can also promote an environment that is prone to mold growth. Increase air flow, raise room temperature, or rely on dehumidifiers and fans to lower moisture levels. In the event of a flood or water damage, a wet vac can be used to extract water within the first 48 hours. If water stands for longer, discard the carpet.

3. Throughout the HVAC System

A number of HVAC components rely on moisture to provide cooling. Be sure to regularly inspect condensate pans, ductwork, and terminal units. Owners or managers may want to hire professionals or have the system modified with access doors so that it is easier for to check for mold.

Mold may also develop in any location where water is usually present, such as bathrooms or near a water heater. Building owners or facilities managers should contact a commercial mold remediation company as soon as they suspect mold growth is occurring in structures in Elmsmere,NY.

10/22/2018 (Permalink)

Although these interactive devices offer numerous convenient and appealing features, it’s important to carefully evaluate your options to ensure a smart smoke detector is the right choice for your home.

Interactive Features

In decades past, a detector that could sense both smoke and carbon monoxide was considered advanced. Today’s smart detectors can interact with other home devices and offer a variety of technological features, such as the following:

  • Ability to transmit an alert to your mobile device if the alarm is triggered
  • Smart touch button allowing you to quickly deactivate false alarms
  • Included nightlight or motion-activated lighting

Each of these capabilities provides useful benefits. However, there are two important considerations that you can assess before purchasing your next smoke alarm.

Cost Comparison

Although budget-friendly options exist, most smart smoke detectors are significantly more expensive than traditional units. You may want to decide what features are most important to you and complete research on available devices before finalizing your purchase to help ensure you obtain the ideal detector for your home and budget.

Compatibility Issues

Not every smart detector may be compatible with every interactive interface. Consider carefully reviewing the details of your desired detector to ensure it’s compatible with your home’s current smart system.

Ensuring Safety

Like a traditional detector, a smart smoke alarm is designed to be an effective fire safety device that may help your family evade a potentially destructive fire. Technological advances have expanded fire alarm capacities, enhancing alert capabilities and the unit’s overall effectiveness. Remote alerts can, for example, warn you of a fire when you are away, helping you quickly request emergency assistance and potentially minimize fire damage and restoration needs. 3. Do a fire damage assessment and inspection to see how badly your business, office, or apartment was damaged. If burn damage was minimal, beware of smoke damage.
  4. Call a professional team to begin removing water and applying fire restoration. Do not remove personal items because they could be soaked with fire-suppression chemicals.
  5. Secure doors, windows, and walls with boards. If the roof has been damaged, use tarps to prevent weather damage to the building’s interior.
  6. Request information regarding cleanup from your insurance company and work with the recommended company to clean and dry out the business, office or apartment.
  7. Request smoke, ash, and soot removal from interior surfaces. This should include all electronic devices, machinery, and fabrics.
  8. Work with your insurance company to completely restore the damaged area.

The process of smoke cleaning, object deodorizing, and fire restoration after a fire can be a long and arduous process. However, knowing what steps to take, and who to contact to help you succeed, can make all the difference in replacing that feeling of dread with a sigh of relief.

How To Protect Your Business During a Thunderstorm: 3 Tips

Storm Damage How To Protect Your Business During a Thunderstorm: 3 Tips Snow storm damage in Tuckahoe, NY

When thunderstorms march across Tuckahoe, NY, they can cause serious damage to your business. Power outages, downed tree limbs and flooding from a torrential rain storm are all possibilities. However, there are several strategies you can use to protect your business and employees from harm when these storms appear.

1. Keep Your Lightning Rod Maintained

If your business is located in a tall building that may attract lightning, then maintaining the lightning rod can be essential. Have the rod checked annually for damage and ask your certification professionals to verify that it is up to code. If your business is located in an area where lightning is common, it is wise to have the unit cleaned and inspected at least twice a year.

2. Maintain All Trees on the Property

High winds can turn tree limbs into projectiles that may shatter your building’s windows and cause serious injury to your customers or employees. While trees can add aesthetic beauty to your property, take care to have them trimmed and maintained so dead branches do not detach and strike people entering your business below. Trimming trees away from your building’s power lines can protect its power source during a thunderstorm, where they might otherwise become entangled.

3. Have a Flood Plan in Place

A heavy rain storm can cause flooding, which can happen suddenly and cause a considerable amount of damage to your business. Having a flood plan in place can prevent this, especially in the case of mitigation services. Contacting a storm damage and flood cleanup service before the wet season can be a wise choice because if your building should experience flooding, you will have help on hand right away instead of trying to find it during a disaster.

Your Tuckahoe, NY, business can take a pounding during a rain storm that includes wind or hail. Knowing how to protect your employees, customers and property can give you an edge over bad weather, no matter when it might happen.

Coping With Water Damage

Water Damage Coping With Water Damage Air mover on a water damage in a Scarsdale, NY home

Water damage in Scarsdale, NY, can happen suddenly and unexpectedly. Whether the result of a storm, broken pipes, or a washing machine malfunction, you’re suddenly facing a big water cleanup task. When you’re preparing to address the mess, consider the following:

  • Safety
  • Assessment
  • Cleanup and Repairs

Keep It Safe

One of the first steps you should take is shutting off power in the affected areas, since water and electricity are a dangerous, potentially deadly, mix. If you need to go into the damaged space, consider the source of the water; if there’s any chance of contamination, such as from storm water or an overflowing toilet, wear protective clothing and wash hands thoroughly after handling anything that has been in the water.

Assess the Damage

If the damage is significant, you may want to contact your insurance company to find out whether or not you have coverage. Keep in mind that water damage is different from flood damage, and insurance companies adjust differently for the two. If you are covered, an adjuster will likely want to take pictures of the damage to help evaluate your claim. You may want to take your own pictures as well in order to have a record of what has happened.

Cleaning Up and Making Repairs

It is important to act fast when you have standing water, as mold and bacteria can begin to grow in as little as 24 to 48 hours. Even if the damage was caused by clean water, the longer it stands, the better the chance of contamination.

In most cases, you should contact a restoration professional to come out and evaluate the situation. These people have the knowledge, experience and equipment to deal with the problem safely and efficiently. They can advise you about the extent of your damages and the need for any repairs, whether fixing broken pipes or replacing damaged wallboard.

Water damage can be frustrating and overwhelming, but following these steps can help you manage the problem as efficiently as possible so that you can get your home and your life back to normal.

Methods for Removing Smoke Odor After a Fire

Fire Damage Methods for Removing Smoke Odor After a Fire House fire in Scarsdale New York

When you have a house fire in Scarsdale, NY, it may seem like the smell of the smoke will never go away. Smoke particles can infiltrate every nook and cranny in your home. They can even imbed themselves into furniture, flooring and walls. Professional restoration experts, however, have methods for extracting smoke odor from your home as part of the restoration process. Here are some smoke cleaning processes that may prove effective in removing the stench from your home.

Air Filtration Devices

One of the first methods the experts are likely to try is an air filtration device. This air scrubber sucks in the air in your home and returns it clean and refreshed. The filters in this system are specially constructed to reduce smoke odor. Some common features of filtration devices that remove smoke odor include

• HEPA filters
• Activated carbon filters
• Treated filters that specifically target smoke

Ozone Machines

Another method of smoke cleaning involves the use of ozone machines. Rather than taking air in, these machines create and expel ozone, the same compound chemical created by a rainstorm that gives the outdoor air its fresh scent. The ozone flows throughout your home, oxidizing smoke residue and neutralizing its odor.

Thermal Foggers

Thermal foggers create deodorizing droplets that permeate the air as well as porous materials in your home to get rid of smoke odor. Using heat and pressurization, the fogger creates tiny particles that can go wherever the smoke damage has gone. Your home is deodorized and cleansed of the stench of the fire.

One of the many advantages of hiring smoke cleaning professionals to remove odors from your home after a fire is that they are equipped with industrial machines that can be used to eliminate the smells. A process that would take weeks or even months with any device you could buy retail can be completed in a matter of hours or days with the advanced methods used by professionals.

Getting to the Root of Mold

Mold Remediation Getting to the Root of Mold Mold damage in Scarsdale business

Where there is water, there is mold. Mold can grow in any climate, even in Scarsdale, NY. If mold is found in your business, following the proper protocol for fungus cleanup is of utmost importance to the health and productivity of your employees.

How Did the Mold Start?

Mold is microscopic, ubiquitous and fast growing. In fact, mold begins growing within 48 hours, and what is seen on the surface is only the beginning of an extensive root system. Knowing how it takes hold and begins growing on surfaces is a great place to start. Here is a list of conditions that promote the growth of mold:

• Areas of high humidity without proper airflow
• Rooms or buildings with poor insulation, leading to water condensation on surfaces
• Undiscovered leaks inside walls

The Myth About Cleaning Chemicals

When mold is found, it is common for a business to reach for frequently used chemicals, such as bleach. The problem with this approach to fungus cleanup is that the solution is not effective on all surfaces. Porous material, where the fungus grows best, soaks up the water in the product, bringing more nutrients down to the root system. The active agents, however, sit on the surface and evaporate quickly, allowing the body of the mold to continue growing unseen.

Proper Eradication

Effective cleanup of mold requires a business to act quickly and aggressively by removing the source. This process relies on techniques and equipment that are specially designed to keep airborne spores from spreading. Rather than risking costly mistakes, a business is wise to look to professional fungus cleanup specialists for this service. Specialists in Scarsdale, NY, have the needed supplies and equipment, as well as knowledge of the local area’s mold cleanup protocols. Additionally, these pros can identify issues that may arise in the future, saving a business time and money and getting to the root of the problem.

If you have mold growing in your business, don’t pull out the bleach just yet. It’s usually best to contact professionals to take care of the issue.

A Leaky Light Requires Quick Action

6/25/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage A Leaky Light Requires Quick Action Electrical Fixture Water Loss

For any homeowner in Scarsdale, NY, discovering a water leak is a frustrating situation. If the leak is water in a light, the hassle of potential water damage becomes a much more serious issue that needs immediate action. Below are three steps that can keep a leak a manageable problem instead of a dangerous situation.

1. Water and Electricity Don’t Mix

When there is water dripping from a light, quickly get the electricity turned off at the breaker panel or fuse box. Do not flip a light switch or turn it off directly at the light source. Since water, and potentially elements within it, conduct electricity, the electric current it carries can transfer to anything touching it—including people. Cutting the power also prevents an electrical fire from starting.

2. Find the Source of Water

Once the electrical power is off, try and find the source of the water in the light and stop it. Stopping the flow of water will help reduce further damage and make cleanup easier. This may require turning the water to the home off if the culprit is a broken water pipe. If there is only standing water and it doesn’t appear to have come from a faucet or pipe, the issue could be structural.

3. Survey the Damage

Inspect the area around the light fixture for additional signs of ceiling damage. Water leaks can build up for days before making an appearance. Any indications of sagging or soft spots could be a sign of significant water damage. It also means the light fixture could become loose, so avoid getting too close.

4. Call for Cleanup

Even with the power off, leave the repairs and water damage cleanup to an expert. Once there is water in a light, the fixture will most likely need to be replaced. If the leak’s source is roof related, its best to let the experts get the problem fixed right to avoid any leaky headaches for good.

If you find water in an electrical fixture, turn off the power, find the water source, and inspect for ceiling damage. Then call a professional for cleanup.

Know the Difference Between Storm and Flood Damage

Storm Damage Know the Difference Between Storm and Flood Damage Storm flooding in Scarsdale, New York

With the rainy season beginning in Scarsdale, NY, it’s important to understand the difference between storm and flood damage so you can protect your commercial property appropriately. Two key differences can help you prepare your property ahead of time and understand what you can do now to prevent extensive damage.

1. Storm Damage Is Not Exclusively Due to Water

Property damage resulting from a storm is all encompassing. Yes, there tend to be rain and flood watches during storms, but there are other concerns that should be on your radar. Wind gusts can pose a threat to the structure, particularly when there are strong gales that are seen in tornadoes and hurricanes. High winds can also result in flying debris, toppled trees and structural damage in more serious cases.

Ensuring that windows are boarded and trees are planted a reasonable distance from the structure are smart practices to help prevent damage due to a storm. Also, routinely checking the roof and HVAC system to make sure they are sealed properly can prevent future storm damage as well.

2. Flood Damage Is Not Exclusively Due to a Storm

Commercial property owners tend to associate flooding with heavy rain storms. While those storms can play a large role in flood issues, there are other instances where floods can damage the office space. The plumbing can be a common culprit, so ensuring all pipe work is in the best possible shape and having proper sealants on pipes can help you avoid these types of flood hazards. Water damage from a flood can result in ruined carpeting and weakened floors or walls if the water stands for an extended period.

Understanding the difference between storm and flood damage will help you know all the risks your commercial property may face, as well as how to prepare. If your commercial space in Scarsdale, NY, does ever suffer harm from floods or storms, contact restoration professionals to make your space like new.

Why Is Mold Attracted to Residential Homes?

5/14/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Why Is Mold Attracted to Residential Homes? Mold can happen anywhere in your home or business moisture or water is present

While mold can happen anywhere, it seems most attracted to residential buildings. Finding black mold in your home can be a nightmare of mold cleanup and remediation, but you can prevent it by understanding the common causes that lead to infestations in your Scarsdale, NY, home.

It’s All About the Water

Mold growth in your home can almost always be traced back to one source: a moisture problem. Black mold thrives on organic matter, but it requires moisture to truly grow out of control and proliferate. Common sources of moisture that lead to mold outbreaks include the following:

• Broken and leaking pipes
• Roof and window leaks
• Standing water left behind by bathtub, shower, and toilet splashing or overflow
• Water trapped beneath linoleum and tile
• Standing water left behind by floods
• Excess humidity and condensation in the air

So How Can I Fix Mold in My Home?

Avoid a mold infestation in the first place by keeping your home dry and free of leaks or other moisture sources.

• Check the integrity of your roofing and window seals and have them repaired as needed.
• If you’ve recently suffered flooding, quickly dispose of any sodden materials and dry out any remaining water, even if you may have to pull up carpeting and floorboards.
• Have a plumber in to check your pipes and keep them in good health.
• Check your appliances, particularly refrigerators and air conditioners, to ensure they aren’t leaking or having problems with condensation.
• If you live in a high-humidity environment, invest in a dehumidifier and run it as necessary to bring down the moisture levels in the air inside your home.

If you’ve already seen outbreaks of black mold, you may need to retain the services of a mold remediation specialist. These technicians can help you identify sources of mold that aren’t readily apparent on initial inspection and recommend appropriate cleanup and prevention actions.

3 Topics To Review With Kids Before a Fire

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Damage 3 Topics To Review With Kids Before a Fire Plan for your family on what to do in case of a fire in your home breaks out

A top priority for parents in Scarsdale, NY is kids safety. When developing emergency drills and plans, parents should remember these three often-overlooked concepts. They will especially help children be mentally and physically prepared for an emergency.

1. Visit a Firefighter in Full Gear

First, it is a terrific idea for children to visit a fire station in Scarsdale, NY, to see a firefighter in full gear before any emergency, especially a home fire. The basic uniform includes a coat, boots, pants, gloves, and a helmet. People may forget that a mask covers the firefighter’s face and his or her breathing device can sound more like Darth Vader. Children hopefully will feel less anxious if they’ve seen a firefighter’s apparatus before a true emergency.

2. Discuss Usage of the Fire Escape

The second item to discuss regarding kids safety is how children actually use a fire escape if they are above the first level of a home or apartment. Children should practice unlatching and opening windows or doors nearby. They need to understand how to physically climb down the house or building. Every bedroom higher than the primary level should have a fire ladder. All family members should know where to find the ladders, how to set them up and how to use them. This process can include pushing or kicking a screen to remove it.

3. Explain the Need To Attract Attention

In a truly desperate situation, family members should all understand it’s okay to break a window to get attention from firefighters below. If children have trouble opening a window, teach them how to break the glass in an emergency.

When it comes to fires and kids safety, drills and discussions are crucial. As children grow and mature, their understanding will expand and actions and responses will vary in any emergency situation. Hence, it’s also important to regularly review and revise your plans for what to do in case of a fire and the necessary work afterwards.

3 Ways Secondary Damage Can Affect Your Home After a Flood

3/19/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage 3 Ways Secondary Damage Can Affect Your Home After a Flood Water Loss after a Flood in Scarsdale

The aftereffects of a flood at your Scarsdale, NY, home can be devastating. Estimating repair costs, sorting through damaged items and gathering data for a flood insurance claim are just a few things you might be dealing with. However, even as you try to handle the aftermath, water damage could be creating issues that you may not notice until days later. From black mold to warping and discoloration of your home's surfaces, secondary damage can exacerbate your flooding woes.

1. Mold growth

After a flood, the high humidity in the area can cause rapid mold growth on walls and other surfaces. Black mold is especially common after flooding, and if you encounter this issue, it is wise to call in a storm cleanup and restoration company to remove it. This can prevent the spores from spreading to other areas, where it may take hold out of sight.

2. Warping

Once flood waters recede, items with porous surfaces, such as wood, can retain moisture and warp. This damage may not occur right away, but over time, you may notice the effects in hardwood floors and wooden furniture. Your countertops may also suffer discoloration if they were constructed with a porous material, such as polished concrete.

3. Musty or Wet Odors

Secondary damage, such as unpleasant odors left behind from dirty water, may not be noticeable until days or weeks after a flood. These odors can linger in furniture, carpeting or even in your home's interior walls, where insulation may be wet and rotting. Restoration technicians have specialized equipment that can help them locate the source of these wet or musty odors and eliminate them.

The immediate effects of a flood in your Scarsdale, NY, home can be difficult to deal with. However, problems that may crop up days or weeks afterward, such as black mold and wood rot, can be equally hard to handle, and being aware of them may help you be more vigilant about their presence once flood waters recede.

Cold-Weather Storm Damage

3/12/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Cold-Weather Storm Damage Commercial Storm Loss

When you think of storm damage, your mind may automatically make the leap to flood waters and lightning strikes. However, storm damage takes many forms depending on the season. During winter in Scarsdale, NY, ice and snow team up to present a whole new type of damage, but with the same results: damage to your business that you’ll have to clean up. The most common wintertime culprits are:

• Frozen pipes
• A burst pipe
• Standing water

While each of these issues has its own level of severity, none of them are good for business for your commercial property, and all of them should be handled by a professional.

Frozen Pipes

The average frozen pipe can be dangerous to your business’s well-being, but it can also be simple to handle if caught in time. The problem occurs when you experience freezing temperatures while your pipes have water in them. The water in the pipes freeze, obstructing liquid water from passing through. If you’re getting little or no water out of your pipes during cold weather, leave the faucet on at a trickle to help thaw the ice in your pipes.

Burst Pipes

A burst pipe is arguably the worst issue you could face when it comes to winter storm damage. If a frozen pipe is left unchecked for too long, the ice will expand and is likely to crack the surrounding pipe. This leads to a large amount of water damage in most cases and requires the assistance of both a plumber and cleanup crew to remedy.

Standing Water

This threat can be a result of either a burst pipe or snow and ice melt leaking through poor-quality weather stripping on your exterior doors. In any case, standing water may contain bacteria and promotes mold growth even in chilly weather, so it’s best to call in professional cleaning services if you find any puddles around your business building.

Your goal is to keep your business safe and functional throughout the seasons. Identifying and handling each of these winter storm threats should be at the top of your list in the colder months.

Remediation or Cleanup: How to Handle Mold in Your Business

2/24/2018 (Permalink)

If your business has a flood or other humidity problem, you may understandably worry about black mold. You may lookup restoration businesses and find that some call their services “mold cleanup,” while others refer to it as “mold remediation.” These are not just different terms for the same thing. To understand how they differ and which is best, you need to know a few critical facts about mold:

• It is almost everywhere all the time.
• It can be dangerous when it spreads and grows.
• Moisture and humidity cause this dangerous growth.

With these essential mold facts in mind, you can take a look at what cleanup and remediation services offer and make an educated decision.

Mold Cleanup

You may notice that some services in Fleetwood, New York, promise to clean up your mold problem. What this means is that the business can wipe off any black mold they find. However, this does not solve the problem altogether. Since mold can spread even after the cleanup crew leaves, this can be insufficient.

Worse yet, the promise of mold removal is outright misleading. Remember that mold can be anywhere at any time. It’s only when there is a humidity level above 45 percent that this fungus can spread and become a problem. If a crew promises to get rid of all mold in your home, they may be deliberately misleading you, or they may not be real professionals.

Mold Remediation

If you come across a business in Fleetwood, New York, that promises to remediate your mold problem, you may have found a real professional. This process should involve bringing the humidity levels down in the building, checking for visible black mold even above the flood line, cleaning all visible mold, and more. Sometimes, your professional cleanup crew may recommend a flood cut, in which they remove that drywall at least six inches above the flood line.

Creating a Fire Escape Plan

2/16/2018 (Permalink)

A fire escape plan for your office is vital. You do not want to wait until emergency strikes before you realize the necessity. It is not only important to have an emergency escape plan but to also practice it.

Preparation

• Decide what disaster you need to plan for
• Prepare basic plans for each disaster
• Assign responsibilities to specific staff members
• Train staff

Disasters and Plans

Some areas are more prone to specific disasters than others. If your business is located near the coast where hurricanes are often an issue, you should have an emergency escape plan in place. If you live in a state that is prone to earthquakes, make a plan. All businesses need to have a fire escape plan among other possible disasters.

Although there may be overlap, devise a strategy for each type of disaster. It should include at what point you send employees home and at what point it is safer to stay put. Consult a professional in Bronxville, New York, if necessary.

You should designate an evacuation route and have a specific meeting spot after the evacuation. Fire escape plans should be posted throughout the building along with any other pertinent evacuation material.

Assign Responsibilities

In order to make sure each stage is implemented correctly and that everyone stays safe, it is important to specifically assign responsibilities. These individuals know what they are supposed to do and you know things are taken care of.

Train

Drills are vital. Many people need to go through the motions for a better understanding of what is expected. Regular practice drills ensure that plans are engrained in employees’ minds. If a fire does break out, the fire escape plan is implemented without a thought. Staff will learn what to do through repetition. Drills should be conducted at least once every couple of months.

Emergency evacuation plans are important. Take the time to write up strategies, assign responsibilities and practice.

Spring Cleaning Before Selling a Home

2/12/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Spring Cleaning Before Selling a Home Spring Cleaning a home for sale is really smart for your sellers! We cleaned our own, but our sending our crews to homes and businesses for sale!

Homes should be in TOP SHOW CONDITION & ready for primetime, to sell  more quickly in Bronxville, NY 10708 ~ in the northern suburbs.

This is just a fact: A clean and fresh smelling home sells faster. Unfortunately, not all homes are maintained in the same way. Nearly all realtors are faced with a listing that is more difficult to show, or smell quite frankly.

In restoration, we get called in for odors dating back four or more decades -- like the 1960s.  They can be old cigarette smells that are buried in the walls, ceilings and duct system, in homes with central air. Duct cleaning is always a great start.

Also, we get pet odor and cleanup calls for everything from multiple cats and floor or carpet stains and smells, to squirrels and other critters removed from an attic or crawl space.  Always an adventure.

Veteran realtors may encourage their clients to keep their homes in top condition for important reasons – or at least get the home ready for photographers and an Open House or two. The reasons may be:

  • Increased market value
  • Shortened list to sale conversion times
  • Enhanced reputation for quality listings and quicker sales

Pass more Home Inspections
Your sellers may have trouble spots to address before you list or a buyer schedules a home inspection.  Clients may choose to handle these issues themselves, to avoid filing an insurance claim for an old water damage.  Leaks and water can lead to mold growth in days, weeks or months.
Mold growth from a leak months or years ago may not be covered by their policy and can affect the home’s CLUE report.

This is their Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange (CLUE) and is a database that records any reported loss and damage information.
Here’s more info to search on your browser...on CLUE: at privacyrights.org

Prior to listing a property, the following steps can be taken to reduce the potential for moisture buildup or mold growth. If a home or listing has a storm or water damage, timely response is the key to preventing further damage and problems within days of the event – act fast, within the first 24 to 48 hours.

Here are some good first steps to addressing these issues ...as your seller (hopefully) get's their house or condo/coop ready for primetime and buyers appointments:

  • Correct any water leaks or standing water
  • Plug in a dehumidifier in the affected area, to reduce moisture and prevent mold
  • Remove standing water under cooling coils, boilers that leak, or air handling units
  • Properly maintain humidifiers, if used during the winter or in baby’s room
  • Replace wet or visibly “moldy” and stained insulation materials
  • Steam cleaning and other methods involving moisture should not be used on any kind of duct work.
  • Install a ventilation system and/or vent the basement, attic or wet area on cool, clear days for an hour or two.

At local Westchester businesses like ours, realtors can get help with and offer their sellers a number of helpful services. These may help revive your sellers’ homes and your listings -- that are found in top show condition.  Some ideas to offer sellers, as needed, are: **Carpet, upholstery, drapery and window blind cleaning (we also clean windows, while most maid services no longer.

Restoration companies include the following services, so we can help you help your sellers get a buyer!

  • Ceiling, wall and harwood / hard floor cleaning
  • Deodorization & odor control
  • Duct & HVAC Cleaning
  • Mold & Mildew Mitigation & REmediation

Window Safety for children this Summer in Bronxville, NY 10708

2/12/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Window Safety for children this Summer in Bronxville, NY 10708 Recently, a child fell from an open window in NYC and is in critical condition. We try to offer Hillary's Home Safety Tips for families: Window guards

Window Safety Do's and Don'ts

With the weather warming up early this summer, it can be tempting to open your windows and let in a fresh breeze. But did you know this is a safety risk for young kids?

Help prevent tragic falls with these window safety pointers:

DO: Ensure all windows are closed and locked when you are not in the room. Children can push windows open.

DON'T: Allow windows to open more than 4 inches. This prevents small children from being able to squeeze through.

DO: Keep windows open at the top, not at the bottom, whenever possible. Kids are less likely to access the opening.

DON'T: Assume that a screen makes the window safe. Screens aren't strong enough to hold even a small child.

DO: Install window safety devices (see below) on all windows — even on the first floor.

DON'T: Make windows accessible. Move furniture that kids might climb on away from windows.

Window Safety Xtras!:

Window stops and guards are designed to help prevent anyone from falling out the window. Window stops keep windows from opening more than a few inches, and window guards block the window opening.

Help ensure safe and effective use of these tips:

  • Purchase the correct type of window guard. Find the correct fit for your window and follow the manufacturer's installation instructions.
  • Know how to remove the safety device. Practice removing it regularly so you'll be prepared to do so in the event of an emergency -- like a fire or carbon monoxide concern in your home.

Most of you know Forrest & me through our SERVPRO of Scarsdale... in Westchester, and from Bronxville concerts and events.  We sponsor town events and have been in the Chamber of Commerce since 2010.

Speaking with an Insurance Company

2/12/2018 (Permalink)

If a person wants affordable restoration from flood damage, it makes all the difference to notify the insurance company.

An insurance agent will open a claim and begin the process of collecting on flood damage. One of the first steps taken with water damage mitigation involves stopping further damage from happening. Flood damage mitigation starts with an emergency visit to the main water valve shutoff. The insurance company may also guide a person on a good water cleanup company. Nevertheless, the person doesn't have to call the flood damage mitigation company they recommended, and he can choose whoever he wants for property restoration.

Not All Water Cleanup Covered under Insurance

Before a person ever buys a policy on water in home, he should first review the policy. This goes the same for if he owns a business and has water in business. The vast majority of policies will cover restoration from after a terrible storm or a malfunctioning washing machine, but gradual leaks for water in home or water in business will not be covered.

Drying Water in Home

Whether people have water in home or water in business, one of the best policies even before calling a water cleanup company involves drying the water. To do this, turn on a fan and bring in some fans to blow on the water and help with drying. Always exercise caution around water and electrical outlets: Water and electricity do not mix. While drying near an electric outlet, people may be better off leaving it alone and calling in a professional water cleanup company.

Real mitigation can be summed up in two words: future prevention. If a person has water in business from a leaky roof, it does little good to repair the damage inside if he failed to fix the shingles on the roof first. The restoration process involves repairing the flood damage after identifying the cause and eliminating it. Water cleanup can stress a person out, but when they take these steps, it lowers the risk and makes it more tolerable.

Fire Damage Restoration for Commercial Buildings

2/12/2018 (Permalink)

It is only natural to jump right in and start with the clean-up exercise. It is a noble thought but one that can have serious ramifications. If ever you fall victim to a commercial fire damage, do not attempt any cleanup efforts. Call in a professional fire restoration firm and let them handle the job.

In a commercial damage predicament, there are several losses you may incur.

The losses result from:

· Damage to assets as a result of electrical fires.

· Destruction of property as a direct consequence of soot damage and smoke damage.

· Water damage from the fire sprinkler systems installed in the building and from the use of the fire hoses in the building.

· Property loss from the fire suppression efforts. This is inclusive of the work by the firefighters and their fire trucks.

· Any damage or loss to items in the utility room with fire combating tools.

All these form the basis of the work to be done by the fire restoration company. Upon assessing the extent of the commercial fire damage, the fire restoration team decides on the ideal actions to restore the business premises to its original state. In cases where there was extensive smoke damage, soot damage or fire damage, especially in cases of electrical fires, more work is needed.

Ideally, fire restoration activities border around the following.

· Clean Up Efforts

This involves draining water released from the fire suppression efforts. Fire sprinkler systems, fire hoses, and broken water pipes from the water sources from within the building. Water from the fire trucks contributes to the damage from the outside.

· Repairs Or Replacements

The extent of soot damage, smoke damage, as well as the fire damage on the building, inform the decision to repair or reconstruct surfaces.

Company Responsibilities in Commercial Fire Damage Situations

· The company should install fire suppression systems. This includes having a utility room with fire combating tools. The company should install a fire alarm, fire hose and a fire sprinkler system. The systems are ideal for dealing with electrical fires.

· Displaying emergency contacts of firefighters, paramedics, companies with fire trucks and that of the local police around the business premises.

· Conducting regular quality assurance assessments on all fire hoses, extinguishers, fire sprinkler systems, and the equipment in the utility room with fire combating gadgets.

Contact the professional fire restoration teams if you fall victim of a fire damage, soot damage or smoke damage.

Different Types of Storm Damage

2/12/2018 (Permalink)

Wind Damage Restoration

Hurricane damage sometimes includes severe wind damage. Roof damage in this situation may range from a missing roof, to harsh winds and rains shearing away asphalt tiles. Roof repair of obvious defects usually ensues in the wake of hurricane damage and storm remediation. Correcting roof damage may challenge homeowners after a disaster, since a roof leak may not appear obvious.

How can a roof leak and roof damage escape easy detection in this situation? Wind damage may loosen flashing, eventually causing another roof leak weeks after the storm. Even a subtle roof leak of this nature can produce damp, moldy conditions inside the home. Obtaining fast roof repair may prevent long term interior damage. A wind damage home restoration expert may assist clients in receiving comprehensive roof assessments and roof repair services when hurricane damage afflicts an area. Their expertise helps property owners address storm damage and roof damage more effectively.

Flooding And Recovery

Flood water frequently poses a risk in coastal areas. Yet heavy rains may cause river flooding miles inland also. If the surrounding terrain cannot absorb ground water, runoff contributes to flood water. Even residents of mountainous areas sometimes sustain varying degrees of flood damage if frozen pipes rupture. Flood pump failures contribute to basement flooding and contaminated ground water in some locations, too.

Flooding may disrupt municipal water systems. Experts need to assess ground water and evaluate the condition of pipes following flood damage. Hiring a storm restoration firm may allow you to begin your cleanup process even before water restoration occurs. (Cleaning before water restoration often proves essential yet challenging.) By relying upon a trained specialist, you'll usually obtain faster storm remediation. These experts may suggest ways to help mitigate flood water damage in the future, for instance, by requesting backup flood pump installation.

Visit http://www.SERVPROofscarsdalemountvernon.com for more information on storm damage.

Winter Weather Damage

2/12/2018 (Permalink)

Ice Damage, Hail Damage, Ice Damming And Restoration

Ice damage due to an ice dam sometimes creates losses.

From ice damming causing river flooding, to hail damage and burst frozen pipes, ice damage proves costly. Leaking frozen pipes and hail damage account for hundreds of thousands of dollars in repair bills annually, for example. When an ice dam contributes to river flooding, losses may increase significantly.

Storm restoration experts help homeowners address these situations.

For instance, these specialists may help prepare your home better to contend with flood water after ice damming. If an ice dam frequently causes a nearby river to overflow, the expert may recommend you install a backup flood pump in your basement. (Ice damming occurs infrequently, yet an ice dam represents a serious threat in some locales.) The local water supplier may shut off water temporarily while evaluating frozen pipes and ground water; let a storm damage expert help you address storm restoration cleanup and flood pump evaluation as you await water restoration.??

Comprehensive Assistance

From obtaining speedy roof repair services to documenting hail damage claims and promoting more rapid cleaning in advance of water restoration, home restoration specialists assist customers. They help expedite wind, flooding and ice damage repairs!

3 Things to Keep in Mind While Creating a Fire Escape Plan

2/9/2018 (Permalink)

According to the American Red Cross, creating a fire escape plan is one of the best ways to prevent serious injury or even death in your home if and when a fire happens to break out. However, not just any old emergency escape plan is going to get the job done. Ideally, a good fire escape plan should:

* Take into account family pets and young and disabled family members who need assistance
* Include multiple exit routes
* Highlight what needs to be done after the fire is extinguished

By taking these issues into consideration during the beginning stages of planning, you can make your escape plan as effective as possible.

Assistance

Members of your family such as toddlers, the elderly and pets will likely need assistance with getting out of the house if a blaze starts. Therefore, when you create your fire escape plan, appoint someone who is able-bodied to assist these individuals. Each appointed person should only be responsible for one other individual or pet.

Choosing Routes

The last thing you want is to have the exit you indicated in your emergency escape plan to be blocked off, ruining the plan and leaving you and your family fumbling for alternatives. Rather than risk that happening, make use of your home’s other exits, such as windows, back doors and more during your escape plan. Running drills using these exits is always advisable.

Post-Fire

Making it out of your house in one piece is the main point, but there are a few steps you’ll need to take after you make it safely outdoors. First, call 911 emergency services. Then, get in touch with your family and friends to notify them that you’re safe. Next, get any people or pets who’ve been injured to medical care right away. Stay out of your home, reach out to your insurance company, and get in touch with a fire cleanup crew in Scarsdale, New York ASAP.

Following Red Cross endorsed steps can keep your family safer and get your home back to normal sooner. Be sure to put these tips to good use.

How To Reduce Secondary Damage From Flooding

1/19/2018 (Permalink)

Flooding from torrential rain or broken pipes can be overwhelming. Water damage can be expensive to repair, and floodwater may damage your personal belongings. Along with obvious problems like ruined sheetrock and flooring, flooding can also cause secondary damage in the form of black mold and mildew. High humidity and excess moisture can cause mold to grow and spread quickly in your Scarsdale, NY home, so it is important to get it under control as quickly as possible by following four steps.

1. Assess the damage. Mold usually grows in hidden places, so you should not assume there is no fungus just because you cannot see it at first glance. It is important to investigate thoroughly to understand the extent of the problem, if there is one. Mold frequently grows in the hidden places listed below:

• Inside wet walls
• Under damp carpet
• In porous items that have absorbed water
• Inside damp base cabinets

2. Remove damp materials. Because excess moisture encourages the growth of black mold, any wet materials need to be torn out of the home as part of the mold removal process. Porous personal items can be saved, but should be dry cleaned. Wet flooring and damp sheetrock need to be torn out and removed so the mold can be treated.

3. Dry the area. Once all wet materials have been removed, use fans and dehumidifiers to help dry the area. Opening windows to allow fresh air to circulate may also help dry out our home. Any trace of moisture should be gone to prevent mold from spreading before you can treat the existing fungus.

4. Use an antifungal treatment and disinfectant to remove mold. Spray an antifungal solution on existing mold and clean thoroughly with household cleaning products. While the first three steps limit the spread of mold, this one eliminates the fungus.

If not dealt with quickly and properly, black mold can spread quickly, posing serious health risks to your family and damaging your home. High humidity can increase the growth of the fungus, leading to even more expensive secondary damage. Following the four steps above may help contain and eliminate the problem.

How To Prevent Secondary Flood Damage

1/19/2018 (Permalink)

When you think of flood damage in Scarsdale, NY you likely imagine high waters, ruined inventory and a lot of mess to clean up. While your imagination is right on the money, it likely hasn’t considered what can be lurking underneath the initial damage. If you do not clean up flood waters promptly and properly, you could deal with black mold, a form of secondary damage.

How Secondary Flood Damage Occurs

Secondary flood damage occurs when initial flood damage isn't cleaned up quickly enough.

1. Evaporating water creates higher moisture levels.
2. Condensation begins to form on your inventory and walls.
3. Condensation causes water damage to these items.
4. High humidity makes the drying process much slower.

These damp conditions can make for a dangerous situation in which black mold can take hold of your business and make it risky for anyone who enters.

How To Prevent Mold in Your Business

To prevent mold and other secondary damage to your business, you must clean up flood waters as quickly as possible. As soon as the electric and gas companies give you the go-ahead to begin the cleanup process, pump any excess water from the building. After the water is gone, you can remove damaged items and decide whether to throw them away or clean them and allow them to dry. Some items, such as boxed or bottled foods and drinks, some types of clothing, makeup, hygiene products and some carpets will need to be tossed out regardless.

To ensure your commercial property is free of black mold, it is important to work with a professional flood cleanup or mold remediation company. Doing so ensures the area is cleaned thoroughly and professionally and that you can re-open your company’s doors as soon as possible. Always work with a business that is licensed, insured and experienced in commercial flood cleanup services.

Tips For Working With a Professional Water Damage Restoration Company

9/21/2017 (Permalink)

Tips For Working With a Professional Water Damage Restoration Company

No one today can guarantee with certainty a lovely home will never sustain potentially devastating water damage. Whether due to an underground water supply line break or a simple frozen pipe break or broken faucet in a bathroom or kitchen, excessive quantities of water in home environments constitutes a true crisis. The process of water cleanup and drying challenges most homeowners.

As instances of successful water damage restoration and mitigation efforts impacting commercial properties demonstrate, obtaining the services of a full time restoration company may help restore your flooded home to habitable condition again much faster. Consider adhering to four practical tips. They'll help you work with a professional water damage restoration company:

Tip Number One: Don't Minimize the Significance of Flood Damage

Over the long term, water standing for extended periods of time inside man-made structures can cause a lot of problems. If you return to a flooded home and don't notice obvious damage, don't mistakenly assume you should not ask experts to check out the condition of the property in detail. Water may have collected under the floor boards and soaked crawl spaces or unfinished basement areas, for instance. Asking a qualified restoration expert to evaluate the actual condition of your real estate can help you save money in these situations. By detecting and removing any rotting wood structures promptly, you'll reduce the potential for mold and mildew development. In some locations, you may also better control conditions which contribute to termite infestations.

Tip Number Two: Follow The Example of Smart Business Owners

Would you expect a large corporation to permit water in business premises to remain without remediation? Most people anticipate a vigorous response by management to standing water in business settings. Viable commercial enterprises react to this type of emergency by calling upon the services of trained water cleanup, drying and mitigation experts. You should adhere to the same high standard for addressing water in home environments. Prioritize the comfort level of your household members as highly as you expect successful business owners to regard customer satisfaction. Asking a restoration company to help you deal with water in home settings usually helps mitigate property losses, too.

Tip Number Three: Consider Establishing Advance Contact With a Restoration Consultant

Just as many companies today prepare for unexpected water in business locations by developing a business relationship with full-time water cleanup, mitigation and restoration firms, you may find it helpful to explore obtaining flood damage restoration company services well in advance of an emergency. While no one welcomes a pipe break or a water supply line break, these types of accidents do occur with some frequency. In low lying regions, flood damage occurs periodically, for instance. Inviting a water cleanup and mitigation expert to your home in advance of any problem may help you learn how to respond to water in home environments effectively. Whether they install a basement sump pump, or offer advice on drying flooring more effectively in the aftermath of a water supply line break or frozen pipe break, these companies help you prepare to respond more quickly to unexpected problems.

Tip Number Four: Rely on Expert Cleaners if You Sustain a Flooded Home

Finally, just like a savvy manager responding to unwelcome water in business settings in the wake of a water supply line break or a burst pipe break, treat water damage in your home with the respect it deserves. If an emergency occurs, call upon an expert cleaner. Don't undertake DIY cleanup methods. Use trained, skilled cleaners instead. By employing specialized tools for drying and extracting water from the premises in the aftermath of flood damage, the company can help minimize your losses. You'll typically restore your flooded home to a comfortable, sanitized condition much faster, and identify any wooden structures in the residence requiring complete replacement more reliably.

Understanding Commercial Fire Damage

9/21/2017 (Permalink)

Fire damage is a catastrophe. The damage to property is significant. Fast response is critical to prevent an increase in your loss burden. It is, therefore, important to pay attention to some issues if you find yourself in such a situation.

What to Do in a Commercial Fire Damage Scenario

Desist from Using Electricity

The first rule in any fire situation is to avoid operating the switches. The risk of an electrical fire is quite high when the lights are turned on or off. The only switch you should reach out for is that of the fire distress call. The alarm triggers an activation of the fire suppression systems that are inclusive of a warning system, and a fire sprinkler system.

Vacate The Premises

Your first action should be evacuating the building. Once the alarm is sounded, let the skilled individuals deal with the rescue efforts. Every organization ought to have trained personnel on matters safety in emergency predicaments. Their training qualifies them to use the fire hoses, and anything useful in the utility room with fire combating tools.

Call Emergency Rescue Teams

Alert the local law enforcement, paramedics, firefighters and any other organization with fire trucks. All fire suppression efforts will be needed to save lives and property.

Clear the Scene

There is the temptation to witness the tragedy. In doing so, you pose a danger to your life. Crowding at the scene affects the fire suppression efforts. Such groups make it hard for firefighters and fire trucks to access the site.

The mold cleanup and mold removal process should only be carried out by trained staffs. The staff also help you remove the smelly odor and deodorization through fogging which you might not be able to do.
? Do not interfere with the affected areas such as the dry walls, paintings, floors, ceiling and any other items. Interfering with this items may expose materials like asbestos. The interference can also present the smelly odor and deodorization.
? If the mold removal services are delayed, do not use movers or fans to blow the smelly odor or the deodorization on the affected material as this might accelerate the growth of the mold colonies.
? Do not hesitate to call the mold remediation company since the mold in home can make the place uninhabitable if the mildew and mold cleanup and remediation process are delayed for a long time.
? Don’t touch or interfere with the mold since it produces spores into the air that can cause irritants. The smelly odors and deodorization fumes may also irritate.

Dealing With Fire Damage in Your Home or Business

7/26/2017 (Permalink)

Dealing With Fire Damage in Your Home or Business

Fire damage should be handled by a professional. A fire damage restoration teams knows how to safely clean-up and repair after the fire damage has occurred. They will be able to let the individual know if their home is salvageable, or if it needs to be demolished. The same would go for a business that's been effected by fire damage. A fire in business usually means lost paperwork, burnt oak desks, and confused employees who are wondering if it's safe to go back to work. When the damage is dealt with properly, a fire in home or business does not mean the end of it all.

How to Get Rid of That Smoke Smell

The odor from a fire can exist long after the fire has ceased. This smoke smell isn't going to go away by putting in an air-freshener. A fire restoration team knows how to combat a smoke smell by using the right deodorizers. They can also clean up a surface so that the smoke smell is no longer present on it. Smoke damage may still be visible. But the right restoration company will be able to solve the smoke damage problem as well.

Allow the Professionals to Clean Up Soot

Soot is what's left after organic material has been burned. A homeowner can create more of a problem by trying to clean up the soot themselves. Walking on soot can embed it into flooring and other materials that can be found in a home. A traditional vacuum can make the problem worse because the brushes on the end of it tend to push soot damage even further into a carpet. So, trying to clean it up without a professional can make soot damage worse. A professional will handle soot damage by removing it with a heavy-duty vacuum. One that is designed to remove soot damage completely.

Call the Fire Department as Soon as Possible

To minimize damage, the fire department should be called as soon as possible. Even if no one's life is in danger. A fire can grow quickly. Which means that it'll be able to destroy more stuff every second. If the homeowner does not wish for their home to be demolished, it is best to call the fire department right away. After which, they should call a fire damage restoration team in to assess the damage.

Commercial Fire Damage Should be Dealt with the Same Way

A fire in home is not much different from a fire in business. Commercial fire damage will likely need the same fire damage restoration team that a fire in home will need. The fire cleanup may take longer as commercial fire damage usually covers a larger area then fire in home damage does. In-fact, commercial fire damage may cover an area as large as an entire office building. Sometimes the building can be salvaged. But this is not always the case when it comes to a fire in business. The fire damage from a fire in business may be too severe.

A Restoration Company May Want to Board Up a Home or Business

If the roof of a home or business has been damaged by a fire, it is common for a restoration company to board up the roof by using a tarp. This restoration company may also board up fire damaged windows, walls and fences using plywood. In some cases, the restoration company is preventing vandalism and invasion by boarding up entrances to the home that have been compromised by a hire.

There's A Lot To Restoring A Home Or Business

While restoring a home from soot and smoke damage is important, there's so much more to fire cleanup. As stated, the newly formed walls in a home must be boarded up. A fire damage restoration team will also have to check the carbon levels, which is often created from smoke damage, to make sure the building is safe for human inhabitants. Fire cleanup is a long process. But fire cleanup can be done at a quicker pace when the fire is put out as soon as possible. It's important to call for help right away.

Water Damage Restoration: What Now?

7/3/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damage Restoration: What Now?

A husband arrives home after a romantic dinner out with the long-haired beautiful wife only to step in an alarming and gigantic pool of wet in the kitchen area. The couple has cherry blossom hardwood flooring, and with all the water in the kitchen, it will soon be wrecked by mold and flood damage. The pressing question of, "What Now?" Demands answering.

Don't Wait: Act!

One of the first tasks a person should start with after water damage is to call up a specialist who understands the gravity of the situation. Because he's been working in the industry, he will have specialized equipment made for water damage mitigation. An individual might be saying, "The damage is already done, so what does it matter?" The problem is how the problem gets progressively worse the longer the wait. Mold will start to form in the home after just 24 to 48 hours and spread like wildfire causing damage to the home and items within the home. In addition, the longer waited, the more the person will pay in the long term because the damages will be worse.

The Three Categories of Water Damage

Water cleanup specialists categorize water damage into three separate categories. First, they have "Category 1." In this category, the flooding water enters the home through a clean source, and it will not be a danger. The most common source from Category 1 comes from the dishwasher. Second, they have Category 2. This category will have bacteria in it and can be dangerous to come into contact with. Finally, there's Category 3, which is the most severe of the categories. This category includes overflowing toilets, sewage backup and storm waters. Water might start from a clean source, but the contact with dirty carpet or soil could raise the category of water damage.

Fire Damage Restoration Explained

Fire Damage Restoration Explained

Ever since fire was discovered, it has been one of the most useful resources. However, it can also be a very destructive force when mishandled. This can lead to an extensive degree of fire damage either with fire in home or fire in business instances.

Definition of Fire Damage:

Fire damage is the extensive destruction that can be brought by an uncontrolled fire. Instances that can lead to fire damage include fire in home or fire in business. If these fires are not extinguished on time then they can bring a lot of destruction on the property or even human beings. However, when this happens the biggest priority is always to preserve the life of a human being. This type of damage usually leads to evacuation of the house during the fire in home or the office premises in a fire in business.

Commercial Fire Damage:

Commercial fire damage is caused during instances of uncontrolled fire in business or even fire in home in the case of apartment blocks. In extreme cases, this fire can be in the vicinity of a big factory or industrial area. This may lead to more damage due to the complexity of the surroundings of the area.

The commercial fire damage may spread widely because of the chemicals that are likely to be found in commercial areas. This includes industrial chemicals, mechanical paraphernalia that operate industries; an extreme wiring that is done in commercial areas among others.

Fire Damage Restoration:

Fire damage restoration refers to all the activities that are carried out after the destruction of the fire. Fire damage restoration is professionally handled by professionals who know how to handle such situations. Before fire damage restoration is carried out effectively an assessment should be carried out.

Soot damage:

Soot damage is the destruction caused by soot left after the destruction of a fire episode. The soot damage can either be oily or dry depending on the type of soot that is in an area. The type of soot also depends on the type of substance that was burned during the fire blaze. It is recommended that you remove the soot during a fire cleanup exercise. Dry soot can be cleaned using a dry sponge; you can also use a lambswool duster or vacuum cleaner. You can remove soot by following these steps:

1. Sprinkle any powder which has absorbent properties like corn starch or baking soda over the area which has the damage.
2. Let the powder sit for like an hour on the soot damage area.
3. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove the powder.
4. Use a dry cleaning agent to soften a clean cloth
5. Clean out the soot damage areas with this cloth. Use rubbing alcohol on the persistent areas that prove hard to remove.
6. Rinse the soot damage area with clean water.

Smoke Damage:

Smoke Damage is caused by the destructive nature of the fire and it affects the air quality due to the smoke smell. The smoke damage is brought about by the gas by-product of the fire. Smoke damage is destructive to corrosive substances like thermoplastics and even non-corrosive substances like cosmetics and some electrical components.

Before any place is declared safe there should be no smoke smell. Excess smoke in the area can hinder this by causing an irritating smoke smell. However, you can clean out smoke damage on furniture by wiping it with a mild detergent and sanding it with sandpaper. Smoke damage can also be black. You can remove it by cleaning out the area with vinegar. This substance also neutralizes the air and removes the smoke smell.

Fire cleanup:

Fire cleanup refers to the activity that is carried out after putting out the fire. It can also be referred to as fire damage restoration as it happens as soon as a commercial fire damage or domestic fire happens. Fire cleanup involves many steps which are done to ensure that the vicinity affected by the fire is safe. Before carrying out the fire cleanup always ensure that the air quality is safe.

It is essential that the air quality is declared safe because smoke is also a destructive force which can lead to further destruction after a fire. Therefore fire cleanup involves removing soot from the whole area and ensuring that the area is smoke-free this can only be done after the air quality has been declared as safe.

SERVPRO of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon sponsors a Pony Ride for Humane Society Fundraiser

Community SERVPRO of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon sponsors a Pony Ride for Humane Society Fundraiser We have a lifelong love of animals at our Servpro of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon, so we had to sponsor a pony ride for our Humane Society's fundraiser!

RESCUE ME is a local Humane Society Program in Westchester County, NY and they need help:  SERVPRO of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon to the rescue!

We co-sponsored a great event last weekend, with a Pony Ride for kids and a Gallery opening with wine and cheese for adults – hosted by Transform Gallery of NYC.

Fun was had by all at their Westchester County Studios, especially the little ones who had their first ride in a saddle, according to some parents.

Our SERVPRO of Scarsdale… was invited to sponsor because Forrest Sheperd’s fine art paintings were juried into the gallery. Also, the Sheperds are friends and fans of Kara O’Neill, the Design Strategist & Art Gallery Director at Transform.

Kara knows all about our horse, Krys, too, and that we are equine fans.  Some of Forrest’s figurative Impressionist paintings are of horses and other “equines.”

As horse, dog, bunny and animal lovers, we had to support the cause and participate in our local Humane Society’s fundraiser. Numerous children’s books and a painting or two were sold that night, plus the show is on exhibit at: www.transformgallery.com

If you can visit the gallery on a weekday, feel free to select a work of art or sculpture, with pet and wildlife themes, to support the dogs and cats -- that need food and a forever home!

Thanks so much,

Forrest & Hillary

SAFE WINDOWS FOR CHILDREN SAVE LIVES IN SCARSDALE NY 10583

7/19/2016 (Permalink)

Community SAFE WINDOWS FOR CHILDREN SAVE LIVES IN SCARSDALE NY 10583 Recently, a child fell from an open window in NYC and is in critical condition. We try to offer Hillary's Home Safety Tips for families: Window guards

Window Safety for children this summer in Scarsdale, NY 10583

When the weather's blazing this summer, it can be tempting to open your windows and let in a fresh breeze. But did you know this is a safety risk for young children? Help prevent tragic falls with these window safety pointers for your kids.

Window Safety Do's

& Don'ts

    • DO: Ensure all windows are closed and locked when you are not in the room. Children can push windows open.
    • DON'T: Allow windows to open more than 4 inches. This prevents small children from being able to squeeze through.
    • DO: Keep windows open at the top, not at the bottom, whenever possible. Kids are less likely to access the opening.
    • DON'T: Assume that a screen makes the window safe. Screens aren't strong enough to hold even a small child.
    • DO: Install window safety devices (see below) on all windows — even on the first floor.
    • DON'T: Make windows accessible. Move furniture that kids might climb on away from windows.

Window Safety Xtras!:

Window stops and guards are designed to help prevent anyone from falling out the window, even our elderly parents, or guests.

Window stops keep windows from opening more than a few inches, and they block the window opening.

Help ensure safe and effective use with these tips:

    • Purchase the correct type of window guard. Find the correct fit for your window and follow the manufacturer's installation instructions.
    • Know how to remove the safety device. Practice removing it regularly so you'll be prepared to do so in the event of an emergency -- like a fire or carbon monoxide concern in your home.

Severe Wind & Weather cause flooded basements in Scarsdale 10583

6/9/2016 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Severe Wind & Weather cause flooded basements in Scarsdale 10583 Our certified, background checked staff will do everything that we can to save a client's flooring and carpeting; It helps if we get in in first 48!

Wild winds and storms since Sunday knock down trees and power lines, causing flooding flooring and failed sump pumps in Scarsdale, NY 10583

You know all about sump pumps, if you have a basement in a Scarsdale, NY home or business, in southern Westchester.

If a power outage from a rain or snow storm has ever shut down your sump pump and flooded your basement, you may have been a little worried this weekend and during monsoon rains yesterday.

Our days of heavy rain and big wind gusts could have caused a power outage, or a brown out in your Scarsdale neighborhood.  So, be sure to check your basement and that your pump is on and any dehumidifiers are on and working.

That's as we get through this stormy, windy week.  This is especially important in older homes in the LowerHud, like our 1898 Colonial in Westchester, NY.

Homes with below ground basements and "ground water rise" through a cement floor or "slab," are inclined to flood.  This makes the fun of finished basements or a clean, safe lower level for the kids' playroom or a media room very difficult in southern Westchester...ahhh!

If certified restoration companies like ours are called in soon, within the first 48 hours -- like that TV show -- we can usually save carpet and flooring!

When the power goes out in an electrical, wind or summer storm -- even "microbursts" like this Thursday that dumped inches of rain in just hours --  it's always wise to keep an eye on your sump pump and power.

If you have valuables, carpeting, drywall rooms and holiday decorations that are not on shelves or in plastic storage containers, check on all when we have these June storms.  Of course, if you have a nice, finished space downstairs, make sure the carpet is not wet and check flooring!

Severe summer storms have been the norm for decades, but we can tell you that they are getting more severe each year because we get more emergency calls for flooding at this time of year.

We all stress out when the power is out, so channel that energy into checking that all of your electrical systems, dehumidifiers and pumps are on and working, especially after heavy rains and snow melt!  If it breaks, or you cannot reset it, then call your plumber.

Meantime, a restoration company may have to come in and help extract the water, or "mop up."   Usually, your insurance will cover a sump pump power failure because it's often considered a "mechanical failure," especially if the power is knocked out.

Restoration companies usually work directly with insurance companies and take photos, document the whole process for your Claims folks, uploading them to support your insurance claim.  Mainly, we try to prevent MOLD!

Did you know nearly 60% of homes in the U.S. have some sort of underground wetness or water damage?

These basements will usually flood again, at some point, but it's really important to dry and disinfect your flooring, to prevent further damage and even mold growth later on.

Usually your carpet can be saved and wood floors, if you call us in "the first 48."  But, the padding should usualy get tossed out in a basement or "grey water" flood situation.

Most home and property owners believe that this only happens when there is a large amount of rainfall or water rising up in your area and affecting your home or business / building.

However, a small amount of water can indeed cause a large amount of problems. In fact, it takes very little time and very little water to create that mildew smell and, later on, harmful mold issues.

No one can guarantee that your sump pump will work 100% of the time and never fail, but, here are some ways to increase the chances that it will work.

Causes of Failure

Some common causes of sump pump failure include electric power outage, wrong size of sump pump installed, improper installation, switch/float arm problems, or lack of maintenance:

Have your plumber check your sump pump and functions at least once per year, while they are looking at your boiler, HVAC unit(s) and or hot water heater.  That's what they do and a plumber visit is a lot more economic than an insurance deductible and replacing ruined flooring, walls and belongings.  Just sayin'...

What You Can Do

Hire a certified and qualified plumber to install and maintain your sump pump annually.  If you’re installing a pump, following the manufacturers instructions very carefully is crucial.

If you’re not familiar with sump pumps and have never installed one, it’s probably best to hire a professional to properly install it. You may not want to fork out the installation fee, but we guarantee it’s a lot cheaper than paying for water damage when your basement floods.

Other suggestions

A professional will know what size pump is necessary for your home and also make sure the switch is working like it should. You can’t control power outages, but you can be prepared for them. Having a generator ready to go as a backup power source can save the day… and a lot of money. Like any mechanical device in your home, maintenance is key. It’s important to check your sump pump regularly to make sure it’s functioning properly.

Easy Maintenance Tips

  • Either quarterly or at least 2x per year, clean your sump pump, run a vinegar solution through it. This will free up any small pieces of debris and help the pump run more efficiently. You can do this yourself, but if there is a serious problem, call a professional.
  • Check the sump pump’s float switch. If this is restricted, it will not kick on when there’s a flood.
  • Clean all vents and air holes so your sump pump can run like it should.

Last, most sump pumps will last about 10 years, according the the U.S. Department of Housing and Development.  If your sump pump gets regularly maintenaned, you could increase this to 10-15, or even 20 years. Our recommendation is to check your sump pump regularly and consider purchasing a generator, if you don’t already have one.

We hope this sump pump info. helps, as calls are coming in, after trees fell on power lines last night.  Welcome to Summer 2016 and the start of Hurricane Season...was the monsoon rain part of Tropical Storm Colin pass by us in the Atlantic.  Will check and be on the lookout for my annual hurricane watch blog.

Stay safe...from all of us at SERVPRO of Scarsdale...!  Cheers!

Severe Sunday Storm Cuts Power to some Sump Pumps, Causing Flooded Basements in Bronxville NY 10708

6/7/2016 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Severe Sunday Storm Cuts Power to some Sump Pumps, Causing Flooded Basements in Bronxville NY 10708 A sump pump failed in a Bronxville office building in their basement, near a storage area. The client called a plumber and we dried up afterwards.

Wild wind gusts on Sunday cut power to some sump pumps, causing flooded basements in Bronxville, NY 10708

You know all about sump pumps, if you have a basement in a Bronxville or area home or business, in southern Westchester County, NY.  The main road is called Pondfield for a reason!

If a power outage from a rain or snow storm has ever shut down your sump pump and flooded your basement, you may have been a little worried this weekend.

Severe storms on Sunday evening took down trees, branches, power lines and electricity to some of us by 9pm.

These big wind gusts could have caused a power outage, or a brown out, so be sure to check your basement and make sure the pump is on, as we greet this sunny week ahead.

This is especially important in our older homes in the LowerHud, like our 1898 colonial that we've renovated -- it's for sale everyone!  Homes with below ground basements and "ground water rise" through a cement floor or "slab," are also inclined to flood, even without a sump pump in play.

This makes our having a finished basement or clean, safe lower level difficult in southern Westchester...ahhh!  When the power goes out in an electrical, wind or snowstorm, or even summer storms and "microbursts," like that April rainstorm, it's always wise to keep an eye on your sump pump and power.

So, carefully check those basements, but do not walk in rising water because it could cause an electrocution.  This is especially true in your Bronxville home or a business, with storage and materials stored in our basements.

We all stress out when the power is out, so channel that energy into checking that all of your electrical systems, dehumidifiers and pumps are on and working, especially after heavy rains and severe weather, like Tropical Storm Colin!  If your sump pump or other system will not reset, then call your plumber.

Meantime, a restoration company may have to come in and help extract the water, or "mop up."   Usually, your insurance will cover a sump pump power failure because it's considered a "mechanical failure."  We work directly with insurance companies and take photos, document the whole process...mainly, Preventing MOLD!

Did you know nearly 60% of homes in the U.S. have some sort of underground wetness or water damage?  This can lead to mold growth quickly or over time, depending on your humidity levels in a lower level.

Most home and property owners believe that this only happens when there is a large amount of rainfall or water rising up in a home.

Some common causes of sump pump failure include electric power outage, wrong size of sump pump installed, improper installation, switch/float arm problems, or lack of maintenance.

  1. Either quarterly or at least 2x per year, clean your sump pump, run a vinegar solution through it. This will free up any small pieces of debris and help the pump run more efficiently. You can do this yourself, but if there is a serious problem, call a professional.
  2. Check the sump pump’s float switch. If this is restricted, it will not kick on when there’s a flood.
  3. Clean all vents and air holes so your sump pump can run like it should.

Last, most sump pumps will last about 10 years, according the the U.S. Department of Housing and Development.  If your sump pump gets regularly maintained, you could increase its "shelf life" to 10-15, or even 20 years.

Our recommendation is to check your sump pump regularly and consider purchasing a generator, if you don’talready have one.

If you do ever become the unfortunate business or homeowner with a water damage and flooded basement, restoration companies work 24/7.  Well, at least Forrest and I have a real human picking up the phone every day of the year, for desperate water or fire damage clients.

This includes all holidays for emergency fire and flood calls.  When there are inches or feet of water in your boiler or laundry room, you want to talk to a person and get immediate help!  It's a free call and complimentary estimate for us to visit your flooded home or business.

We hope this sump pump blog helps you and yours, as our calls increased from falling trees this weekend. Welcome to Summer 2016, from all of us at SERVPRO of Scarsdale...!

General Happy May Day Week ~ an official Spring start to our year It's lovely & calm this Spring-ish weekend & so enjoyed having our Servpro friends over. It's May 4th tomorrow, so Forrest is quoted our fav Star Wars

This is to wish all of you a Happy May Day, as we truly see signs of Spring...at last!

...if it was just not so cold and rainy!

But these April Showers are helping our May flowers that we planted Saturday.  The rain also helps us with the "Force" -- Forrest's goofy joke about:

"May the Force be with you!"

 Really??!

We had a BBQ with lovely SERVPRO friends from near and far this Saturday and the weather was warm and wonderful, at least until sunset!

SERVPRO of Upper Cape Cod's Beth & Billy Russell joined us and stayed the night.  The Smiths came down from their SERVPRO of S.E. Dutchess, from upstate NY a bit; plus, Lucille & Roy Eterre, my Houlihan Lawrence realtor and star, joined us with her husband!  Had so much fun!

Doing a Sun Dance for next weekend, so we can get our shorts and flip flops out in NY State, for good!

Enjoy...this rainy week and feel free to join in the sun dance!

MOLD removal in NY State for 10x10 square feet - It's a fungus among us and only a fungacide can kill mold in a Yonkers home or business 10704

    5/2/2016 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation MOLD removal in NY State for 10x10 square feet - It's a fungus among us and only a fungacide can kill mold in a Yonkers home or business 10704 Our trained technicians who respond to remove any mold will create containment, so the spores from this organic growth don't spread in your building

Remove any Mold & Mildew in your Home or Business for for health & safety, as of January 1, 2016 in NY State ~ Yonkers

This is why it’s important to remove and mitigate any mold in your house or your business, before someone has health issues -- according to:  epa.gov/mold/mold-and-health.

The EPA has finally come out in 2016 and issued a federal statement that Mold can cause health issues because of the “spores” that it sends into the air and that humans may breath in.

Mold is a fungus -- like those mushrooms under tree roots in the woods.  It is essentially the deterioration of organic matter and it's fine living outside.  But, it's better for humans, the Feds state, if we do not have mold living with us inside our home or business!

If your structure has had a leak, has an ongoing dampness problem or was flooded by storm surge, you may be growing mold.  In some cases, your property insurance may cover mold growth, if it is the result of a "water damage," leak or mechanical failure with your sump pump, for example.  Call your insurance broker.

Dampness offers ideal conditions for mold to grow and feed off of organic materials – like drywall, wood or cloth. After water damage has occurred, mold can begin growing in as quickly as two days in a ripe, humid area in your affected home or business.

When you encounter mold, your ability to breathe properly should be your top concern. Mold can create health problems through those spores it releases into the air, to actually let other mold and organic growth to know that it “owns” this wall or floor area.

These health issues may cause breathing difficulties, allergic reactions, infections and other issues, according to the EPA.  This is especially true among children under 12 years old, the elderly and anyone who is immune suppressed (HIV/Aids patients or anyone who has had recent surgery or chemo therapy, etc.)  You may be required to evacuate the home or interior of the property, when the presence of mold becomes too much.

Any standing water should be removed and cleaned up as soon as you notice it. This eliminates the ideal growing conditions that allow for mold to grow and thrive in your property.  Dehumidification can only work, once any leak is patched or fixed and standing water is removed.

    What Causes Mold?

Mold is likely growing in your home if you have moisture there. Many types of moisture problems can lead to mold growth. These include damp clothing, leaky pipes, roof leaks, a lack of ventilation, floods, water in the basement, and condensation.

You should always hire a company that has undergone extensive training and is certified in IICRC coursework – this is the national standard that originated in NY State and it’s the most trusted certification for mold removal.

Our IICRC training includes courses on how to:

    • Determine where water is coming from
    • Identify the presence of mold
    • Ensure mold does not spread any further
    • Remediate mold
    • Utilize thorough drying techniques to ensure mold does not continue to grow and impact your building
    • Restore property or advise on methods necessary to do so

You may need to bring in a Home Environmentalist, also known as an Industrial Hygenist, and have them conduct testing.  Only someone in a lab coat, who tests organic materials in a Petri dishe can determine the amount and type of mold.  The testing by an IEP or Home Environmentalist simply gathers the evidence and they send it to pros at a lab.

Then, with their clinical findings our restoration company now has "menu" for removing the mold and we can go to work, to best remove it / mitigate it. We do not test for mold because it is a conflict of interest.

    Identifying the Mold

Mold has no set appearance and it can be any number of colors, including black, gray, white, green or pink molds.

One sure sign is visible identification of mold. But if the mold is unusual in color or size on a wall or floor, or in a closet, you might not even realize what you are seeing. Mold can grow in polka dots on walls and trim or will grow in a cluster.  It can grow in places you may not be able to see, for instance, inside your walls.

    Determining the Presence of Mold

A IEP or tester – like Jim Rood at Lighthouse Environmental, or Mike at Family First Environmental in Westchester, NY can verify any:

    • Visible signs of mold
    • Musty odors
    • Humid conditions
    • Symptoms of a neurological nature, including dizziness and headaches
    • Signs of long-term dampness
    • Stained or discolored floors and walls
    • Peeled paint and bubbling wallpaper
    • Warped or buckled floors, walls and bowed trim or supports
    • Damp flooring and surfaces

Get your home or business dry and call in pros, who will be sure to spray fungicide for mold because bleach and over the counter cleansers do not kill or remove it.  Mold is a fungus and must be removed with a fungicide! Testing has shown that bleach does not kill or remove mold, it just lightens it and makes it dormant, until water or humidity returns -- like in our bathrooms.

Call us for an appointment to conduct a walk-through and Scope of Work in your home or business ~ 8a until 5p, Monday through Friday.

We look forward to working with and for you on your mold issue, by appointment, at a convenient time for your family or business.

What happens with a Puffback or appliance fire in your Bronxville home or business in NY 10708

    5/2/2016 (Permalink)

Building Services What happens with a Puffback or appliance fire in your Bronxville home or business in NY 10708 No space heaters, but a boiler that gave up in 18 degree temps for days. We cleaned this puffback in a $3m home that was 4k sq ft., even the bathrooms

Preventing Heating Hazards that lead to a Puffback, fire or soot damage in your Bronxville, NY home or business - 10708!

We treated this cleanup like a fire damage or restoration because of the threat of mold growth later on -- as if the basement flooded from water suppressed firefighters' efforts to save the home.

I am reblogging this post for the holidays because boilers are working overtime with cold, rainy May days / nights!

It’s time to think about preventing a fire, soot damage or “puffback” in your home or business again, especially if you have a boiler heating system or use space heaters.  It’s all about maintenance and being safe!

Our winter season is ending -- and it’s getting warmer --so, our boilers are working overtime.  They are on at night for 40 degrees and off on our warm days in the high 60s.

We are all looking for warm alternatives as 2016 Spring ramps up, with summer on the way.  But, some of us are saving oil money and just leave space heaters on in bedrooms, or have fireplaces for a cozy wood fire.

But, this is also the time of year that house fires happen from clothing dropped on a space heater in the dark, or a boiler that may need maintenance and is just DONE.  It can “puffback” soot into your property, or a portable heater can be moved too close to a fabric chair or couch that may be flammable.

A puffback occurs when an oil burner backfires and sends oily soot throughout your home or business.  This anomaly can happen if a boiler is older, not well-maintained 2x per year, or just malfunctions for technical reasons.

Most of us love a warm, cozy home and a comfortable workplace, so we may light a nice fire at home on winter evenings, or move a space heater near our couch and under our desks at the office.  In fact, alternative heat sources like fireplaces, portable space heaters and wood burning stoves are getting a lot of use, with our polar vortex cold temps in the NYC area in recent years.

Our family has a new-ish, energy efficient boiler in Fleetwood, NY, but our oil bill is still painful to open each early Spring month.  So, I got my father and stepmom some portable heaters—the safe, non-flammable and oil filled kind when they lived with us.  When they moved to Independent Living, they took one and we kept the other one.

There is less of a fire hazard with these contained heaters, although I'm fond of "ceramic heaters" under my desk at work in cold months like January!

We  just want to make everyone aware of the risks for portable heaters and unattended wood fires.  That's because our SERVPRO of Scarsdale/Mount Vernon has responded to some really tragic soot damages from large fires, or boilers that puffed back.

You may want to stay on the alert about heating sources that are too close to your ergonomic fabric chair at work, or your dog's favorite fabric chew toy near your evening fire.

Most of us, who enjoy decorating, will have a fireplace area that is surrounded by a flammable carpet or home decorations.   There is a reason that builders put non-flammable slate or brick around our fireplaces.

So, just keep an eye on children’s or pet’s toys that stray onto the “hearth” next to that crackling, cozy fire.

Heater malfunctions or fabric igniting are among the leading causes of home fire deaths, making it important to review ways that can help you reduce a heating-related fire risk (National Fire Prevention Association).  Get those boilers checked

...and please keep any space heaters away from bedding, or your couch and the fuzzy afghan throw that "Aunt Ellen" knitted for your family!

Here are some of my helpful (we hope) tips and hints from Hillary ~ about heat source and appliance fire prevention:

    • Maintain your heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected annually by a qualified professional.
    • Use heaters that have a recognized label for safety from a qualified company / laboratory.
    • All heaters need space, so keep flammable objects at least three feet away from heating equipment.
    • Plug space heaters directly into outlets, never into an extension cord or power strip.
    • When using fuel-burning heaters, uses only the type of fuel specified by the manufacturer, AND keep them maintained!
    • Install and maintain carbon monoxide and smoke alarms inside your home and business; test alarms monthly.

If you do experience a nightmare "Puffback" -- like a fire or soot damage, do not get out the cleaning spray and your guy's old t-shirt rag with auto oil stains.

You want to "dry clean or wipe" the soot from EVERY surface -- or you'll find it on stuck on your little chatchkes forever.  This will seal the odor and particulate into porous surfaces.

Or hire a licensed contractor because soot is a particulate and can be carcinogenic if ingested / inhaled.

We hope that you never have to call us for help and a puffback or traumatic post-fire cleanup, but we're here 24/7 and 365 days per year, if you need us.

HURRICANE SEASON starts June 1, 2014 in Fleetwood NY 10552

    4/28/2016 (Permalink)

Storm Damage HURRICANE SEASON starts June 1, 2014 in Fleetwood NY 10552 Superstorm Sandy was an historic 200 year storm, hitting the NYC area hard only 2 years after Hurricane Irene & Tropical Storm Lee flooded Westchester

Storms like Superstorm Sandy may be our new normal, with Climate Change in Fleetwood, NY 10552

Winters will be more severe and summers, hotter!, according to national weather experts with Ph.Ds after their names!

Hey all...sorry to be a weather geek, but our recent hurricane seasons just fascinate me.  It's either all or nothing, with Superstorm Sandy in 2012 and then, last year, we had "La Nada."  It's especially funny because forecasters warned of a bad La Nina storm season for summer 2013, especially in August and September.

Plus, in our business, we need to "saddle up" for storms that may flood home and business owners.

Lately, we need a weather vane for events like the microburst last June in Westchester County and our Polar Vortexes that caused frozen pipes this January.

We have all hands on deck in weather disasters, especially if Superstorm Sandy is our "new normal!"  BTW:  Very exciting to announce our new Small Woman Owned business, alongside our SERVPRO.

My construction side is All Hands on Decks, Kitchens & Bathsa small woman owned business that is getting BIG. Forrest and I are the principals and we help disaster victims with their rebuilds, back to paint.  We'll try to throw an Open House for that one on or about our 5th anniversary for SERVPRO of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon -- June 2016!

So...with a supposedly slow hurricane season on tap this year, there are a few reasons why scholastic and other weather forecasters are calling for fewer storms in 2014.  Southern Westchester and the east coast of the U.S. will see a below average storm season, according to national weather services, the Feds and NOAA and even universities in Colorado and on national newscasts.

First, we look like we are developing an El Nino pattern in the Pacific this year -- or what I call "fewer storms, but more severe," if they make landfall in the U.S.

The science of it is that El Nino seasons mark a warming in the Pacific Ocean along the equator that suppresses tropical storm development around the planet.

Also, after Superstorm Sandy, officials warm that storm surge can be the most deadly factor in hurricane conditions.

Basically, I'm a weather junky because I want to know what to wear...oh, and our family Sevpro of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon is often weather driven, I watch the action off of the coast of Africa, from the Sudan desert to the Caribbean Islands south of us in the U.S.

The six-month storm season begins June 1 & ends on Dec 1 each year.  We usually only reach the j's, for named hurricanes, but that may change with El Nino leaving us soon, forecasters say.

These are some of the names for the 2016 Atlantic season:

    Claudette

General Puffback prevention from boilers needing maintenance Tuckahoe NY 10707 This is your "average Joe" boiler in Tuckahoe, NY. This is the new one, as we concluded a Puffback cleanup that took a week, as soot went everywhere.

Call your oil company and get your boiler maintained yearly, to prevent a puffback in Tuckahoe, NY 10707

A puffback is a messy furnace malfunction that occurs when an oil burner backfires, sending soot throughout your home or business.  It can happen all at once, covering a whole home or business -- and every horizontal surface -- in grimy soot.

Or, a puffback also can be the result of a boiler that leaks soot particles more gradually. Maintenance twice per year is the secret to preventing this issue!

If your home or business is affected by puffback, contact a certified restoration team, preferably a local company in your community, near Tuckahoe.  You don't want day workers or folks that no one knows on your property.  This is a tough clean up and can take days to remove all the soot particles after a puffback.  So, look for highly trained, background checked soot restoration techs for this work.

It's always best to "shop local" in Eastchester/Tuckahoe are best when you have a sooty mess on every surface in your home and business.  This is essentially a fire cleanup, as if there was a burning room or oily kitchen fire and Tuckhoe's finest came to put the fire out.

Companies that do restoration, like ours, have the training, the EPA regulated and other cleaning materials and the experience to quickly and efficiently get your property clean again.

Often, our guys and gals leave a home or business cleaner than it was before your puffback.  We have to touch and clean EVERYTHING, to make it "Like it never even happened."

First step, make sure that your boiler is maintained  yearly  -- usually for free -- by oil companies like Dale and Dennis at Besson Oil.  Now's the time with warmer days and cold nights.  That's because your boiler has been turning off and on a lot, during this odd and warm-ish winter.

So, some older boilers or machines that have not been cleaned annually, may blow creosote and particulate all over.  Good luck and this is just a reminder to get the maintenance done, so you won't need me and Forrest and our teams later.

    Spring is on the way...yaaaayyy!

Do's & Don'ts in Fire Emergency in an Eastchester home or business 10709

Fire Damage Do's & Don'ts in Fire Emergency in an Eastchester home or business 10709 We serve Easchester, Scarsdale, Bronxville, Tuckahoe & Fleetwood/Mount Vernon property owners after small or "Large Loss" fires & Restore vs. Replace!

We understand the stress & trauma after a fire affects your home or business in Eastchester, NY 10709

One of our great employees had a smoked ham for Easter one year, unexpectedly.  That's after Mom left her oven mitt in the gas oven after basting the dinner.  Needless to say, the gas stove caught the fabric on fire and smoke went everywhere.  They saved the meal and their ham tasted "smoked" and "was the best they'd had in years."

That's a happy ending, but we have had tragedies, like my family's barn on our horse farm, after  it burned down with generations of Model A and Model Ts inside.  We got the puppies and doggie mama out in time!

Then, there are beloved pets that do not make it out of the fire and survive, and there we are, crying with our clients for their lost, furry loved ones.

Fires are never pretty and we always hope that no one is hurt.  But, who are you going to call, "Ghost Busters??"  After dialing 911 and once your local fire department saves your structure, we hope, who can help get your life and belongings back?  We can often save flooring, carpets and rugs, even textiles -- like your clothing in a closed closet and sentimental items -- wedding dresses, etc.

Once the Fire Department pulls out and the American Red Cross, our national partners, arrive to help and take anyone to a hotel or place to rest, who do you call?

We are called Restoration companies because we are trained and certified for Fire & Water Cleanup after a fire and/or flood.  Remember that most fires are "water suppressed" by fire hoses, then within days, you may have mold growth and mildew.  Get help soon and don't wait for adjusters to fly in, as you can always assure your insurance company that you tool the right, timely steps  save your structure, as noted in most of our insurance policies.

    Do's and Don'ts:

Here are some Do's and Don'ts until help arrives because it's natural to want to start cleaning a building and moving its contents after a fire.

Timely action can be a big help, but incorrect or delayed actions can do more harm than good to your rugs, flooring and belongings.  Wait for us to help and clean correctly.  Call us directly at your local, 914- restoration company Westchester County.   This way, we can:

    1) Board up the building and secure any open windows and doors!

    2)  Start getting the water out and drying your structure (if the building department allows).  But, if you are waiting for a Claim number, or the local Fire Marshall and Building Department officials to clear your building, so we can enter, the cleanup is going to take time.

    3) help begin the cleaning process, removing broken glass, soft materials and recovering sentimental belongings

-- that's after Eastchester's finest in the Fire Department saves your home, business and the roof.  Our teams handle commercial Large Loss fire damages as well as helping homeowners with more "minor" kitchen fires or in an attic!

What you can do until help arrives

After any fire damage situation, your primary focus should be safety:

    • Is it safe to stay in the house?  It's best to get outside, get some fresh air and wait for help!
    • Electrical and "slip and fall" hazards are some of the most prevalent concerns, especially if you have a grease fire and slippery floors.
    • Only do activities that are safe for you to perform, then call 911 and get out.
    • Wet materials can be VERY heavy. Be careful, especially removing wet carpet.

***We dry flooring and carpet first for a day, then we remove the heavy carpets, rugs and materials safely, without any back or other injuries! Be safe!

It's our job as a Restoration company that serves our Westchester community, where we live and own a business, to provide all the help needed to make the fire damage

    "Like it never even happened."

We get you back to painted walls and floors and surfaces that are cleaner than before.

Call for help and just be careful of space heaters and unattended candles, as we weather this cold start to Spring 2016.  Best of luck!

Preventing and Thawing Frozen Pipes that can flood your home or business in Scarsdale, NY 10583

With crazy low temps that I'm calling "Bi-polar weather" -- heck with Polar Vortexes -- some of us may have the messy and often expensive issue of frozen pipes.  If it could just be normal in the mid-Atlantic without all these highs and lows...and below freezing for days, right?!

All of we independently owned SERVPROs (1,630+ in U.S. and Canada)are now national partners with The American Red Cross.  They were so helpful to New Yorkers after Superstorm Sandy and the many local floods and fires that our SERVPRO of Scarsdale... responds to annually.  Below are some of ours and the ARC's information, with some suggestions about preventing water pipes from bursting in your home or business.

Keeping your property's water pipes from freezing, and knowing how to thaw them if they do freeze, can help as our COLD 2016 begins:

Along with our ARC partners, we want you to be prepared and informed, so you can avoid the messy and often expensive issue of frozen pipes. Below are our suggestions on how to prevent water pipes in your home, business or properties  as far south as Florida, fromm freezing -- during these bitter winter temps.  Also, we offer ideas on how to thaw them if they do freeze.

Why Pipe Freezing is a Problem

Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the "strength" of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break. Pipes that freeze most frequently are those that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, water sprinkler lines, and water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets. Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation are also subject to freezing.

    Preventing Frozen Pipes

Before days of freezing weather impacts your properties pipes, the following recommendations can help prevent a top down flood from pipes bursting in your attic, or a wet basement / lower level:

    ·     Drain water from swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines following manufacturer's or installer's directions. Do not put antifreeze in these lines unless directed. Antifreeze is environmentally harmful, and is dangerous to humans, pets, wildlife, and landscaping.

    ·     Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.

    ·     Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the basement, crawl space, attic, garage, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes in these areas should be insulated.

    ·     Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a "pipe sleeve" or installing UL-listed "heat tape," "heat cable," or similar materials on exposed water pipes. Newspaper can provide some degree of insulation and protection to exposed pipes – even ¼” of newspaper can provide significant protection in areas that usually do not have frequent or prolonged temperatures below freezing.

During Cold Weather, Take Preventative Action

    ·     Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.

    ·     Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.

Forrest and I hope you never need us for a flood, or have to get help from any other qualified restoration company.  That's why I offer helpful Home Safety Tips from Hillary like this one.  Be warm, watch out for frostbite tonight.  Plus wrap any exposed pipes as temps stay below freezing this week everyone!

Take care of your Scarsdale Property in advance  and you can avoid a flood disaster.  Happy New Year!
